Evening desert safari Dubai sunset over the red dunes

Best Time for Desert Safari in Dubai: Month-by-Month Guide (2026–27)

Quick answer
  • The best time for a desert safari in Dubai is October to April, when daytime highs drop from the mid-30s to the low-20s °C.
  • November to March is peak season — cool evenings, clear sunsets and the most comfortable overnight camping.
  • In summer (June–September) safaris still run daily, but a morning or evening slot avoids the midday heat.
  • Within any day, the late-afternoon slot gives you dune bashing in golden light, sunset on the dunes and dinner when it is coolest.

We get this question on WhatsApp more than any other: “When should we do the desert safari?” Our drivers have been running tours in the Lahbab Red Dunes since 2009, so the answer below comes from what we see on the sand every week, not from a weather website alone.

Dubai desert weather at a glance

The desert is usually a few degrees warmer than the coast during the day and noticeably cooler after sunset. Use the table as a planning guide — the evening temperature is what matters most for the camp part of your tour.

Sunset times are approximate for Dubai and shift a minute or two each day. We adjust pickup times through the season so you reach the dunes before sunset.

Peak season: November to March

This is when most visitors come, and for good reason. Sand is cool enough to walk on barefoot, sandboarding is comfortable, and the camp feels like a night out rather than an endurance test. Evenings in December and January can drop to the mid-teens in the open desert, so the overnight desert safari is at its best — you sleep in the cool air and wake for sunrise.

The trade-off is demand. Weekends, the UAE National Day holiday (early December) and the Christmas–New Year fortnight fill up first, so book a few days ahead if your dates are fixed.

Shoulder months: October and April

October is our favourite “insider” month. The summer heat has broken, hotels are cheaper than in December, and the camps are lively but not packed. The evening desert safari is the natural choice: you arrive at the dunes in the late afternoon, dune bash as the light turns orange, and eat dinner after the temperature has dropped.

April is similar in reverse — warm days, pleasant evenings, and lighter crowds once the spring school holidays finish.

Summer: May to September

Yes, safaris run all summer and many families visit during school holidays. The key is timing:

  • Morning desert safari — early pickup, dune bashing and sandboarding before the heat builds, back at your hotel around lunchtime.
  • Evening safari — the dunes are hot at arrival, but you are in an air-conditioned 4×4 for the drive and the camp is far more comfortable after sunset.
  • Avoid midday activities such as long quad or buggy sessions between roughly 11 am and 3 pm.

Drink more water than you think you need, and tell us if anyone in your group is sensitive to heat — we can keep the dune drive shorter.

Ramadan and public holidays

Desert safaris continue during Ramadan, which is expected to begin around early February 2027 (exact dates depend on the moon sighting). Camps typically pause live music and dance shows and may adjust dinner timing out of respect for the holy month. Many guests actually enjoy the calmer atmosphere. We confirm what is running on your date when you book.

What time of day is best?

If you only do one safari, choose the late-afternoon departure. You get the full set — dune bashing, sunset photo stop, camel ride, sandboarding and BBQ dinner with shows — in the most comfortable part of the day. Early risers who want photography light and empty dunes should look at the sunrise desert safari.

From our drivers: what we notice season to season

  • Winter sand is firmer after cool nights, which makes for smoother, more controlled dune runs.
  • Haze is more common in summer; the clearest sunsets tend to come between November and February.
  • Wind days happen year-round. On a strong-wind day we may shorten sandboarding or change the route — safety always comes first.
